Charles Atlas: Painting by Numbers
Charles Atlas: Painting by Numbers - Barclays Center’s Oculus, New York - Highlights - Luhring Augustine

Painitng by Numbers (2011), a work by Charles Atlas, will be on view at Barclays Center in New York from August 1st through the 30th.

Presented as part of Art on the Hour on Barclays Center’s Oculus, this presentation is adapted from a three-channel installation for the Barclays Center Oculus screen, with the numbers moving in unison, split apart, and regrouped in a graphic study of order and chaos. Painting by Numbers (2011) is part of Charles Atlas’s trilogy of digital artworks, The Illusion of Democracy. The work treats the numbers 1 through 6 as characters, choreographing them in intricate patterns across the screen. Its title plays on popular paint-by-number kits, with digits swirling like brushstrokes as they expand and contract into geometric and abstract forms.
